What to Expect During a Reiki Session

“To offer Reiki is to be a beacon of hope in someone’s storm”

— Garry Malone

My first Reiki session with a practitioner was in 2017. I’ve just learned about energy healing during a class that I was taking while studying holistic nutrition. Even to this day, it remains my favourite class, and I have saved all my class notes. At the time, I was experiencing some academic burnout and stressing about making the next assignment on time. On top of that, my hormonal disorders were wreaking havoc on my body, and extra help was needed. I was looking at my body as a nutritionist would, without realizing that my spirit was crying out for help. I finally decided to listen, take the plunge into the unknown, and give Reiki a try.

As I travelled on public transit to my first-ever Reiki session, my mind was full of questions and expectations. I was definitely a little nervous but also excited to experience this wonderful holistic Japanese energy-healing technique I’ve heard about. The practitioner that I went to see was also my teacher, who taught the class that I’ve enjoyed. She has been doing Reiki since 1998 and was very knowledgeable. I was already comfortable around her, and that to me made a huge difference.

When I arrived at my session, I was greeted with a warm, welcoming smile that made all my doubts drift away. Before the session started, we talked about my health issues, and my practitioner/teacher answered all my questions. I then lay down on the Reiki table with my eyes closed, wearing an aromatic lavender eye mask, a soft blanket covering me and listening to soothing music. The warmth was the first thing that I noticed as I felt hands very gently covering the top of my head. Then came the tingles, which I can only describe as the sensation that I would always get when my grandmother would softly comb her fingers through my hair when I was little. With it came a very relaxing state, where I almost fell asleep.

After the session, there was a change in me. I had so much clarity all of a sudden, instead of the brain fog that I usually had throughout my whole day. I felt more optimistic and the usual aches and pains of my body were not so prominent. That day, I truly started believing that Reiki would make a big impact on my life and health.

Now, nine years later, that belief has become even stronger now that I am a Reiki practitioner myself. As of now, I do mostly distance Reiki sessions, but I also do a few in-person sessions. I am hoping to offer them more in the future.

You might be wondering what to expect during a Reiki session with me and what goes into it.

My role as a practitioner is to guide the Reiki energy to the areas of need in the recipient’s body. I hold a compassionate and supportive space to facilitate healing, balance and well-being. Before the session begins, I will take time to connect with your energy, and we can set intentions for any areas that you would like to bring healing to.

During the session, most of my clients experience tingling, pleasant warmth and calmness. Some may drift into a very deep relaxing state or could experience release of emotions. Every Reiki session is unique to the individual and brings its own transformation and clarity. After the session concludes, I take a few minutes to discuss any insights/guidance that have come through for you. Sometimes those insights come in the form of an Oracle card that I draw from a specific desk that I am guided to. Other times, it is a gentle nudge for a client to follow if they are open to it. I always trust my intuition and what I am feeling as someone who is deeply clairsentient. I am passionate about helping my clients to step into their own power and discover their true self that lives inside them. Currently, I am working on teaching Reiki classes and can’t wait to see where that path takes me.
